I don't have any fancy graphics on them, but they do look quite professional nevertheless. I print them on post card stock from Paper Direct (1-800-A-PAPERS). Paper Direct has a large variety of multi-colored stock designed to be separated into post cards, and they also have matching business card stock if you want to make your own ham "business" cards. (The post cards come six to an 8.5"x11" sheet; the business cards are 10 per sheet.) FWIW, I've given them quite a bit of business over the last year or so--both professionally and personally. I've never been disappointed with them. 73 jpd, n9ycr -- Phil Draughon -- Manager, Network Operations Center Northwestern University -- Evanston, Illinois USA ------------------------------ Date: 19 Aug 1994 11:22:47 GMT From: news.delphi.com!gilbaronw0mn@uunet.uu.net Subject: Cushcraft R7. Does it work? To: info-hams@ucsd.edu I have a Cushcraft R7 antenna. It has never been satisfactory. It resonates on some bands and not on others. I have had several traps replaced but as soon as it fixes one band I have to get another trap for another band. I have it mounted 4 feet above my roof (no metal and nothing else within 40 feet) which Cushcraft claims can be a problem but that it should be adjustable. This week I got a new 12 meter trap because it would not even tune into any part of that band. It fixed 12 meters but now the lowest swr on 18 mhz band is 5 to 1. The 20 and 15 meter bands resonate way below the band edge. The 40 meter band works fairly well. Has anyone gotten this antenna to perform as advertised on all its' bands? I must say Cushcraft has been pretty tolerant. The last trap was sent to me ups blue arrving yesterday and I have had the antenna for two years so they extended the warranty. The problem is that the great service is not a help if I can't get the antenna to function. I really have the feeling of a 350 dollar ripoff. HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLP please. Does it work? To: info-hams@ucsd.edu I posted a message earlier about my troubles with the R7. It is now working as it should and I think I will be happy. It turns out that the one I originally purchased had two bad traps. Not very good quality control. I have recieved these and have the antenna adjusted and it works fine on all bands. The marks, bad F-- for quality control but A++ for friendly service. It is a good thing too, I have moved and have no tower now so I need it on 20,15 and 10 badly. Detlef: I have not seen any Nickel Metal Hydride battery packs offered yet, probably due to some charging differences between them and NiCd and the fact that most of the quality cells are diverted to volume users. You may want to keep an eye open for cells offered by VARTA (made by Toshiba) and some made by SAFT in France. With the increased cell capacities now available in NiCd, NiMH seems only practical in situations where every minute of runtime is critical....(Laptops, cell phones...etc.) Check out QST in the next few months for an article if you have access to a copy. It's been 8 weeks and 4 days, but that's not the frustrating part. Four of us went and took our tests together and the other three got their license's yesterday. (Not too bad, 8 weeks 3 days). I thought maybe it got delayed in the mail, but still had not come today. Sooo I decided to give Gettysburg a call. They have me in the computer as having received my application, but it has not been processed. They could provide not other information other than my application has been received and not yet processed. My thinking is that all four applications would arrive in the same envelope and all four should have been done at the same time. (The other three have concurrent call signs). They could not answer if my got lost in the office or provide any information. I thought if it was lost, they could immediately start working on the process to correct that. Now it appears all I can do is wait and see what happens. Sorry about taking up space, but I feel better getting this off my chest. On August 17, 1994, the FCC released the following auction notification for Narrowband PCS: FCC RELEASES NARROWBAND PCS RECONSIDERATION ORDER AND FURTHER NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULEMAKING The Commission today released an order on reconsideration of its Third Report and Order (Third R&O) which established service- specific rules for competitive bidding for the award of narrowband PCS in the 900 MHz band. The reconsideration builds on the successful completion of the first simultaneous multiple round auction of 10 nationwide narrowband PCS licenses. The Commission made minor changes to its auction rules and strengthened provisions designed to enhance opportunities for designated entities. Auction Rules The Commission retained the flexibility to release bidder identities. It will announce in advance of an auction by Public Notice whether it will release bidder identities. The Commission retained discretion to set suggested opening bids or minimum opening bids in order to speed the auction process. The Commission said it would defer until after the regional narrowband PCS auction a final decision concerning the auction design for the 12.5 kHz MTA and BTA paging response channels. Designated Entity Provisions The Commission took three steps to enhance the opportunities for designated entities to participate in the auctions and in the competitive provisio provision of service. Finally, the Commission issued a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in which it indicated that it will consider whether "entrepreneurs' blocks" similar to those adopted for broadband PCS would be appropriate for promoting participation of designated entities in the remaining narrowband auctions. The Commission asked for comment on whether up to 4 MTA and 2 BTA licenses should be included in the plan, if it adopts an entrepreneurs' block. In addition, the Commission asked whether the BTA licenses should be licensed on a regional or national basis. The Commission also asked for comment on the following issues with respect to an entrepreneurs' block: Whether bidding credits should be granted to small licenses for a period of three years from the date of the license grant; and whether, for a period of years after that, the Commission should permit the licensee to assign or transfer control of its authorization only to an entity that satisfies the entrepreneurs' blocks entry criteria. //---------------------- Henry E. ST-142 2m HT. It still works pretty well. I bought it back when I was in the Civil Air Patrol, before I got my ham license. I have a subaudible tone board in it, made by "Communications Specialists", I think. It is programmed by burning the codes for the tones into a chip of some sort, possibly a ROM. I've still got the programming board, which used a 12V power source. Unfortunately, the tones programmed into it don't match any of the local 2m repeaters. The chip itself is marked M1-0198-S, and has an "H" logo in front of the number (Harris?). Does anybody know if that chip is still available? Does anyone perhaps have the single page of programming instructions for this board? Does anyone make another tone board for this make and model of HT? Thanks. 73 de... /--------------+------------------------------------\ | | Internet: davesparks@delphi.com | | Dave Sparks | Fidonet: Dave Sparks @ 1:207/212 | | KD6PDZ | BBS: (909) 353-9821 - 14.4K | \--------------+------------------------------------/ ------------------------------ Date: 17 Aug 1994 21:06:02 GMT From: news.cerf.net!bengal.oxy.edu!acsc.com!gopher.sdsc.edu!nic-nac.CSU.net!charnel.ecst.csuchico.edu!yeshua.marcam.com!news.kei.com!ssd.intel.com!chnews!ornews.intel.com!@@ihnp4.ucsd.edu Subject: Yaesu FT530 vs Icom W21AT - A summary of opinions To: info-hams@ucsd.edu My original post was In article <CHENNU.94Aug15131245@pdxcs037.ichips.intel.com> you wrote: : Hi, : As the subject says I am considering purchasing a dual-bander HT. : I would like to get the opinions of those who have used them. : Any recommendations would hbe welcome too. : HRO has the Yaesu for 449.95 & the Icom for 434.95 Here are all the responses I got ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: (null) I investigated both before my purchase of a W21AT. I used several (including the Yaesu) that other people owned at local ham club meeting. While most people owned others the only gripe they had about the W21at was that it looked weired. (Too modern for them I guess.) They never griped about performance. Some things I like about my W21AT: I like the fact it is also a general coverage receiver all the way up to 900mhz. Several of my favorite "cop" frequencies are in it as well as the relay of the local radio news channel to its tranmitter tower. I like the fact that you can buy the optional "empty" battery case the BP-130. With this case you can load up your own ni-cads or alkaline batteries. This allows you to buy a nicad charger cheaper than you can buy ICOM's very expensive charger. I like the ability to put the W21AT in a mini-repeater mode. I like the smaller size. Other brands are not far behind but the smaller the radio is the more likely you are to carry it. I like the ability to use "wisper"mode. Although I havn't used it yet. You can alway call 1-800-USA-ICOM and talk to a tech rep anytime. They will even answer stupid questions! Mine one grip: It uses a special &^$%#&!! power cord! The plug (which is only available from ICOM) on a pigtail is $14! I do like the special filtered cigarette power cord though for $24. I say buy the one the guy offers you! ####################################################################### ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: (null) ###################################################################### ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: (null) I have owed Icoms (not the w21at but others). Check the 4-Sale ads....you will see all kinds of Icoms up 4- Sale and never see a FT-530 for sale. Think about it! ##################################################################### ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: (null) Until recently, it certainly looked like the Yaesu FT-530 was the one to beat. But I think if I were going to buy a dual-bander today, (and indeed, I have been thinking about it :-) I think I'd go with the new Kenwood TH-79A. Frankly, the alphanumeric display, which lets you program in names for the frequencies in the memories looks like a real winner. Too, I think I've always thought the Kenwoods have had somewhat nicer cosmetic design. Price of a 79A should be in the same ballpark (maybe +$25) as the other units you're considering if you shop carefully. ##################################################################### ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: (null) ==ken ##################################################################### ------------------------------ Date: (null) From: (null) have both radios . . . and the ICOM is up for sale! The ICOM looks nicer than the 530 but that is all. The ICOM has terrible audio on receive (due to the lack of speaker), the buttons are too small to hit one and a time, the display is poor in good light and worse even with the built-in night light, the small antenna is next to a dummy load. The 530, to my mind, is a much better radio, while it may not look as sexy, it is much more user friendly to use and program. 73 ########################################################################### And poor ole me is as confused as ever. :-) However I am definitely leaning towards the FT530. Most of the lamp and appliance modules have a local control override feature that lets you turn off/on the lamp or appliance connected to the module, and then the module will act as if it received a command to turn on the module. The method used is apparently to trickle a little current through the load and look for a change in the load. There are tips on removal of this "feature" from the modules in the FAQ for the home automation newsgroup. I have an appliance module (has a relay that turns on/off the load) that exhibits this behavior of turning itself on. I'll be trying the mod this weekend to see if that cures it.
